Box Breathing

box 1.jpeg

Box breathing (also known as square breathing) is a simple yet highly effective breathing technique that helps calm the nervous system, reduce stress, and create a greater sense of focus and clarity.

This practice involves breathing in, holding the breath, exhaling, and holding again for equal counts, creating a steady and balanced rhythm. This structured breathing pattern helps bring awareness to the present moment and can be used to support relaxation, emotional regulation, and mental clarity.

Box breathing is widely used by military personnel, athletes, and high performers to help manage stress, stay grounded, and maintain focus during high-pressure situations.

Find a comfortable seated position and allow your body to relax. Close your eyes if it feels comfortable, and begin by taking a slow, steady breath.

How to Practice Box Breathing:

  1. Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds

  2. Hold your breath for 4 seconds

  3. Exhale slowly through your mouth or nose for 4 seconds

  4. Hold your breath for 4 seconds

Repeat this cycle for several rounds, keeping your breathing smooth and relaxed. Allow each breath to bring you into a deeper state of calm, awareness, and connection with yourself.

4-7-8 Breathing Technique

The 4-7-8 breathing technique is a calming breath practice designed to relax the body, quiet the mind, and support nervous system regulation. By creating a slow, intentional breathing rhythm, this technique encourages a deeper sense of relaxation and helps shift the body into a more peaceful state.

This practice can be especially helpful during moments of stress, before meditation, or as part of a bedtime routine to support rest and inner balance. With regular practice, 4-7-8 breathing can become a simple tool to reconnect with yourself and return to a state of ease.

How to Practice 4-7-8 Breathing

  1. Find a comfortable position, either sitting upright or lying down. Relax your shoulders, soften your face, and allow your body to settle.

  2. Close your eyes and take a gentle breath in through your nose.

  3. Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds, allowing your breath to fill your lungs comfortably.

  4. Hold your breath for 7 seconds, staying relaxed and avoiding any strain or tension.

  5. Exhale slowly through your mouth for 8 seconds, allowing the breath to release gently and completely.

  6. Repeat this cycle for several rounds, keeping the breath smooth, steady, and comfortable.

  7. When you finish, take a moment to notice how your body feels and allow yourself to remain in this calmer, more grounded state.

This practice is a simple way to slow down, reconnect with your breath, and support relaxation whenever you need it.
